Maker's Story
Steinbach Volkskunst
Marienberg, Germany
Founded in 1820
Handcrafted in Germany for over 200 years, the Steinbach Volkskunst nutcrackers are impeccably made through attention to detail, creativity, and the finest materials. Keeping the tradition alive for centuries was not always easy: World War II forced the family to abandon their workshop and without any belongings move to Hohenhameln, where they began production again and found that American soldiers stationed in nearby Hannover wanted to bring an original German souvenir back to the United States – the Steinbach nutcracker. This helped boost the family’s production and allowed them to return to Marienberg in the Ore Mountains for the last 70 years. Today, the craftsmanship continues in the Ore Mountains, managed by German-native Rico Paul and Robert Liebich, who are preserving the legacy of the handmade nutcrackers for centuries to come.
