Maker's Story
ulu
Hulualoa, Hawai’i
Founded in 2018
On the slopes of the Hualalai volcano, the morning sun and vibrant bird songs illuminate the mountain, and as afternoon approaches, clouds settle in and bring evening rain – ideal conditions for the coffee tree. Over 40 years ago, founder Phil Hodson’s mother Carol settled on five acres of pasture and mango groves, and soon planted macadamia nut trees on hillside of the Hualalai volcano. Years later, Phil noticed a new tree growing on the land a coffee tree seeded by natural fauna, it was this moment that the idea of ulu was born. Learning from neighbors how to grow these delicate cherries, Phil and his son now harvest the fruit and macadamia nuts in small batches from their farm. Phil’s passion for ulu resides in his love for Hawai’i and in celebration of his mother’s love for the land.
